Repetition and polysyndeton are literary devices that are used primarily for emphasis towards a section of writing within a passage. While these devices do not always produce a gramatically perfect sentence, their intended effect is usually to provide a simplistic or realistic image in the mind of the audience. Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, and F. Scott Fitzgerald have made effective use of repetition and polysyndeton in their particular works.
